Luckyday Mentor Application

Please fill out this application if you are interested in serving as a 2025-2026 Luckyday Residence Hall Mentor. Your application must be submitted with completed reference by February 16, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. The reference form needs to be completed by an RA or a mentor (RA or mentor does not need to be on your floor). It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure the reference forms are completed by the deadline. Applicants can check in the GO System to see if the references have been completed. If the reference section says submitted with the recommender’s name, then that indicates the form has been completed and submitted into the GO System.

Description
The position of a Residence Hall Mentor in the Luckyday Scholars Program will require committed, open, and motivated scholars to serve as support for freshmen in the hall; encourage students in their academic endeavors; strive to be an example of a servant-leader; encourage students to contribute positively to the Luckyday Program; and to be a strong support of The University of Southern Mississippi. Mentors must be willing to commit to one full academic year in this position.

Requirements include:

  • Be in good standing with The University of Southern Mississippi and the Luckyday Scholars Program.
  • Maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA
  • Strive to be an example of a servant-leader in daily life
  • Serve as an in-house resource guide of the campus for freshmen by keeping up-to-date with the events and services offered on campus
  • Enthusiastically participate and assist with Luckyday Preview, welcome events, and other events as needed
  • Participate and encourage mentees to be involved in Luckyday programming
  • Live with a roommate in Luckyday Hall and maintain a healthy rooming relationship

  4. Our mentors begin the year by participating in training sessions, have weekly meetings during the semester, and have other workshops throughout the year. When considering the intentional and complex role of a mentor, what are skills you hope to gain and topics you hope to learn more about for you to be the most effective mentor you can be?
  5. Mentor training will take place May 9-10 and August 4-17. Do you have any conflicts that would interfere with these training dates? If yes, please explain.
  6. If given the opportunity to move to the group interview round, do you have any conflict with attending an interview on Feb 20-21? If so, please state your reason. There will be multiple interview times to choose from during this timeframe. For the group interviews February 20-21, you will be able to choose people with whom you want to interview in groups of about 4. If you know who you want to interview with, tell us why you would be interested in perhaps being a mentor with them on your floor?
  7. We want to learn more about the person behind the application! You will be asked three questions and will be required to record your answers through the Big Interview online platform. Instructions for Big Interview -Use Google Chrome Internet browser -Copy and paste the following link below to access the Big Interview platform: https://app.biginterview.com/members/assignments -Click on Students, then select The University of Southern Mississippi -Create an account and enter your name, your USM email (must use your USM email address to access Big Interview), and create a password. -Your account is now created. Next, click on the Login page. -Log in with your USM email and your Big Interview password. -Enter code: 7eec10 You are now ready to answer the interview questions! Please record an answer for all three questions. You will be able to record your answers as many times as needed but will have a 3 minute time limit per answer. When asked about the eye tracking calibration, it is not required that you use that feature so feel free to select “Practice without eye tracking”. Once you have answered all three questions, please click on “Submit Assignment”. Then you will have the chance to review your video responses and click “Submit Final Answers”. Then “Assignment Successfully Submitted” will briefly appear in green at the top of your screen. You will not be able to edit your videos after you click on “Submit Final Answers.” Next, be sure that you are on the “Interview Assignments” page and you should see at the top of your screen “Active” and “Submitted”. Click “Submitted”. Then, click the up arrow at the top right of the Luckyday Scholars Application box, then “Link”, and finally “copy link”. Paste the link in the Luckyday Application in GO in appropriate space. Your link is a unique link and will only be viewed by the selection committee. For best results, consider the following: Dress for success: Consider what you will wear to convey the impression that you would like the selection committee to have of you. Think about your background: Find a clean, quiet place to record your interview and communicate with others around your to ensure you can record your interview without disruption or distraction. Make “eye contact” with the camera. Don’t read directly from a screen or print out. Just talk naturally to show your true self.
